What is the most important information I should know about Ultram?
Return to topUltram has been shown to cause seizures, especially in patients taking certain antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants), some opioids, and MAO inhibitors. There is a greater risk of convulsions if you have a history of seizures, epilepsy, have drug/alcohol withdrawal, or a nervous system infection.
Ultram may cause dependence. You should not use it if you have previously been addicted to an opioid.
Who should not take Ultram?
Return to topDo not take Ultram if you are allergic to tramadol or any of its other ingredients. Also, do not take this drug if you are currently using alcohol, analgesics, narcotics, opioids, or other antidepressants.
What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Ultram?

What is the usual dosage?
Return to topThe information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.
Adults: The usual starting dosage of Ultram for adults over the age of 17 is 25 milligrams (mg) a day. Approximately 25 mg of Ultram should be added every 3 days until you reach a total of 100 mg a day. After this, 50 mg may be added daily until you reach a total of 200 mg a day. After this step by step dose increase, Ultram 50 mg to 100 mg may be taken as needed for pain relief every 4 to 6 hours. Do not exceed 400 mg a day of Ultram.
How should I take Ultram?
Return to topTake your daily dose of Ultram in the morning. Only take the recommended dose, and not more. Overdosing may result in depression, seizures, or even death.
What should I avoid while taking Ultram?

Avoid operating a car or heavy machinery while taking Ultram, as it is known to impair such abilities.

It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Ultram with the following: carbamazepine; digoxin; MAO inhibitors; opioids; quinidine; SSRIs or tricyclic antidepressants, such as cyclobenzaprine and promethazine; triptans, such as sumatriptan, zolmitriptan, etc.; and warfarin.
What are the possible side effects of Ultram?

What should I do if I miss a dose of Ultram?
