What is Vaseretic?

Vaseretic is a combination product that contains two medicines: enalapril, known as an ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor, and hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic or water pill. These two medications work together to lower blood pressure in patients who may have not had enough blood pressure lowering from other medications.

What is the most important information I should know about Vaseretic?

If taken during the second or third trimester of pregnancy, Vaseretic can cause serious harm or even death to an unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking Vaseretic, call your doctor right away for instructions on how to safely discontinue this medication.

Vaseretic can cause a rare but serious allergic reaction leading to extreme swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat, or gut (causing severe abdominal pain). If you experience these symptoms, stop taking Vaseretic and contact your doctor or seek medical care right away.

Who should not take Vaseretic?

You should not take Vaseretic if you do not produce urine, you have a history of sensitivity or allergic reaction to ACE inhibitors, or you are allergic to sulfonamide-derived medications. You may be more at risk of experiencing sensitivity or an allergic reaction to Vaseretic if you have allergies or wheezing or breathing difficulties.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Vaseretic?

Mention all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Vaseretic. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant, or if you have ever had an allergy or sensitivity to an ACE inhibitor or sulfonamide-derived medication.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual dose is 5/12.5 (5 milligrams [mg] of enalapril and 12.5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide) or 10/25 (10 mg of enalapril and 25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide).

How should I take Vaseretic?

You should take Vaseretic with or without food at the same time every day.

What should I avoid while taking Vaseretic?

Do not operate automobiles or heavy machinery until you know how Vaseretic will affect you. You should avoid becoming very dehydrated and drink adequate fluids while taking Vaseretic, because this could cause your blood pressure to drop too low. You should not take salt substitutes or supplements containing potassium unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Vaseretic?

If Vaseretic is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Vaseretic with the following: cholestyramine; colestipol; corticosteroids; insulin; lithium; methenamine; nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen or naproxen; norepinephrine; potassium-sparing diuretics, such as spironolactone, amiloride, and triamterene; potassium supplements; salt substitutes containing potassium; skeletal muscle relaxants; and thiazide-type diuretics, such as hydrochlorothiazide.

What are the possible side effects of Vaseretic?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Can I receive Vaseretic if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Vaseretic should not be taken during pregnancy. Taking Vaseretic while you are pregnant could cause serious harm or even death to your unborn baby. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Vaseretic is excreted in breast milk, and should not be taken if you are breastfeeding.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Vaseretic?

If you forget to take Vaseretic, do not double your next dose. Skip the dose you missed and then return to your normal dosing schedule.

How should I store Vaseretic?

Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container and protect from moisture.
