Vistaril is used to treat anxiety, tension, and agitation caused by emotional stress. It is also prescribed as a sedative to alleviate anxiety and tension before or after certain medical procedures (e.g., dental procedures or surgery). In addition, Vistaril is used to help control the following: nausea and vomiting (except during pregnancy), anxiety due to alcohol withdrawal, and extreme emotional distress associated with certain allergic conditions such as asthma, chronic hives, and severe itching.

Vistaril should not be combined with other central nervous system depressants such as narcotics, barbiturates, or alcohol.

Vistaril should not be used during early pregnancy. Also, do not take Vistaril if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it.

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Vistaril. Also talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Relief of Anxiety and Tension

Adults: 50-100 milligrams (mg) 4 times a day.

Children: Under 6 years old: 50 mg daily in divided doses. Over 6 years old: 50-100 mg daily in divided doses.

Relief of Itching Due to Allergic Reactions

Adults: 25 mg 3-4 times a day.

Children: Under 6 years old: 50 mg daily in divided doses. Over 6 years old: 50-100 mg daily in divided doses.

As a Sedative Before or After Surgery

Adults: 50-100 mg.

Children: The doctor will calculate an appropriate dose based on your child's weight.


How should I take Vistaril?

Take Vistaril exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is usually taken in divided doses.


What should I avoid while taking Vistaril?

Avoid drinking alcohol or taking any other medications that may cause drowsiness or decrease your alertness.

This drug may cause drowsiness; be careful when engaging in activities that require alertness such as driving or operating heavy machinery.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Vistaril?

If Vistaril is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Vistaril with the following: barbiturates, other sedatives or nervous system depressants, narcotics, and non-narcotic painkillers.


What are the possible side effects of Vistaril?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: dry mouth, drowsiness, tremor, convulsions


Can I receive Vistaril if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Vistaril should not be used during early pregnancy. It is not known whether Vistaril is excreted in breast milk. Since many drugs do appear in breast milk, you should not take Vistaril if you are nursing.
