  • What is Toviaz?

    Toviaz is a medicine used to treat symptoms of overactive bladder, including frequent urination, urgency (increased need to urinate), and urge incontinence (inability to control urination).

  • What is the most important information I should know about Toviaz?

    Toviaz can cause drowsiness or blurred vision. These effects may become worse if you use Toviaz with alcohol. Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform other dangerous activities until you know how Toviaz affects you.

    Toviaz can cause angioedema (a condition involving swelling of the face, extremities, eyes, lips, and tongue). Stop taking this medication and tell your doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms.

    Toviaz can cause heat prostration (fever and heat stroke due to decreased sweating). You may become overheated in a warm environment or during increased physical activity.

  • Who should not take Toviaz?

    Do not use Toviaz if you have urinary retention (inability to urinate normally), gastric retention (a blockage in the digestive system), or glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).

    Do not use Toviaz if you are allergic to it, any of its ingredients, or a similar medication called tolterodine (Detrol).

  • What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Toviaz?

    Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Toviaz. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney or liver problems, urinary retention, gastric retention or other stomach problems (such as severe constipation), glaucoma, or myasthenia gravis (a disease characterized by long-lasting fatigue and muscle weakness).

  • What is the usual dosage?

    The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

    Adults: The recommended dose is 4 milligrams (mg) once a day. Your doctor may increase your dose as appropriate.

    If you have severe kidney impairment or are taking certain medications that can interact with Toviaz, your doctor will adjust your dose appropriately.

  • How should I take Toviaz?

    Take Toviaz as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow Toviaz whole; do not chew, divide, or crush tablets.

    You can take Toviaz with or without food.

    Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform other dangerous activities until you know how Toviaz affects you.

    Do not drink alcohol while you are taking Toviaz. If you drink alcohol, drowsiness can be enhanced.

    If Toviaz is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Toviaz with the following: birth control pills, carbamazepine, certain antibiotics (such as clarithromycin, erythromycin, or rifampin), or certain medications for fungal infections (such as itraconazole, ketoconazole, or miconazole).

  • What are the possible side effects of Toviaz?

    Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

    Side effects may include: constipation, dry eye, dry mouth, trouble emptying the bladder

  • Can I receive Toviaz if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

    The effects of Toviaz during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

  • What should I do if I miss a dose of Toviaz?

    If you miss a dose of Toviaz, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.

  • How should I store Toviaz?

    Store at room temperature and protect from moisture.
