  • What is Vancocin Oral?

    Vancocin HCl is an antibacterial agent used to treat two bacterial infections of the colon, enterocolitis and antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis.

  • What is the most important information I should know about Vancocin Oral?

    Vancocin HCl can cause temporary or permanent hearing loss. Your hearing may need to be tested on a regular basis. Stop taking this medication if you have any hearing problems or ringing in your ears.

    Some patients may require blood monitoring, especially if you have kidney disease and/or a gastrointestinal condition called colitis.

    Vancocin HCl should only be used to treat bacterial infections. It will not treat viral infections like the common cold.

    Although it is common to feel better early in the course of therapy, you should use this medication exactly as directed by your physician for the entire length of time prescribed. Complete the full course of therapy and do not skip any doses.

  • Who should not take Vancocin Oral?

    Do not use Vancocin HCl if you have a known hypersensitivity to vancomycin.

  • What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Vancocin Oral?

    Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Vancocin HCl. Also talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if have kidney disease, problems with your hearing, or gastrointestinal conditions such as colitis.

  • What is the usual dosage?

    The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

    Adults: The usual total daily dosage of Vancocin HCl is 500 milligrams (mg) to 2,000 mg, divided into 3 or 4 equal doses per day for 7-10 days.

    Children: The usual total daily dosage is 40 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight, divided into 3 or 4 equal doses per day for 7-10 days. The total daily dosage should not exceed 2,000 mg.

  • How should I take Vancocin Oral?

    Take this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Skipping doses or not completing the full course of therapy may decrease the drug's effectiveness, increase the chances for bacterial resistance, and will not be treatable by Vancocin HCl or other antibacterial drugs in the future.

  • What should I avoid while taking Vancocin Oral?

    Avoid skipping doses or not completing the full course of therapy. This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for another infection unless told to do so by your doctor. A different medication may be necessary in those cases.

  • What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Vancocin Oral?

    If Vancocin HCl is used with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Vancocin HCl with other antibacterial drugs called aminoglycosides.

  • What are the possible side effects of Vancocin Oral?

    Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

    Side effects may include: hearing loss, ringing in your ears, urinating less than usual or not at all, low blood pressure, skin rash, difficulty breathing, pain and muscle spasm of the chest and back

  • Can I receive Vancocin Oral if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

    Vancocin HCl should be used during pregnancy only when clearly needed. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Since Vancocin HCl may appear in breast milk, you should consult your doctor if you plan to breastfeed your baby.

  • What should I do if I miss a dose of Vancocin Oral?

    If you miss a dose of Vancocin HCl, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

  • How should I store Vancocin Oral?

    Store Vancocin HCl at room temperature.
